WePresent No. 5

Editorial Design

Paula Scher designs a community-focused issue of the print magazine from WeTransfer’s digital arts and editorial platform.

Introducing Queen Mimi of NoMad, cover star! Pentagram partner Paula Scher was invited to design the latest issue of WePresent magazine, the print publication of WeTransfer’s digital arts and editorial platform, and gave the leading role to her beloved Australian Shepherd, Mimi.

Each issue of WePresent is created in three separate versions by three different sets of designers. Number 5 has a focus on neighborhood and community, the three variations were designed by Scher in New York, Turbo in Amman, and Hort in Berlin.

In keeping with the issue’s theme, Scher and her team created a map of Mimi’s morning walk through Manhattan’s NoMad neighborhood. Mimi is not one to sit and pose for pictures, so all images of the dog, as well as those used in the map, were created with AI through DALL-E. The Pentagram pet also shows up in a story about creativity as an interspecies phenomenon.

Scher and her team used the issue as an opportunity to play with type, including the blown-up Helvetica they recently created for Scher’s first NFT, along with the retro-futuristic Megazoid (by David Jonathan Ross), the OTvar font Calcula (by Shiva Nallaperumal) and hand-lettering by the artist Karo Akpokiere.

The magazine is available for purchase globally via Stack, and at magCulture in London and Athenaeum in Amsterdam.
