Pasadena Playhouse, the state theater of California, is honoring the work and impact of the late, Pulitzer Prize-winning composer-lyricist Stephen Sondheim with a six-month celebration during its 2022-2023 season. Pentagram has designed a campaign for the series of performances that builds on the identity it previously created for the institution.
The special season includes full-scale productions of the musicals “A Little Night Music” and “Sunday in the Park with George” and a tribute concert by one of Sondheim’s muses, Bernadette Peters. The Playhouse is also working with area high schools on a presentation of “Into the Woods” that features students collaborating with theater professionals. In line with the Playhouse identity, the Sondheim posters, animations, and other promotional materials use a mix of found imagery, montages and photo-illustration. The work takes heavy inspiration from Tadanori Yokoo, a Japanese graphic designer know for his psychedelic pastiche style of collage.
