The signs created by the homeless have unintentionally become some of the most basic and raw examples of graphic communication in our daily lives. The musician and traveller Joe Ely, who was homeless himself, collects these hand-written signs. Pentagram Papers 39: Signs contains photographs of the homeless by Michael O'Brien along with images of their signs by Randal Ford and a foreword by Joe Ely.
