Pentagram Papers 17: The Many Faces of Mao considers the cult of Chairman Mao, which generated thousands of likenesses in various materials. Buttons grew so large that Mao himself asked citizens to stop because the aluminum used to make them was creating a shortage in plane manufacturing. By the early 1970s, Mao buttons disappeared from public view.
