De Bijloke

A new identity for De Bijloke, a beloved music centre in Ghent.

An identity that is alive in every moment, reflecting the living nature of music performance, each performance is unique, defined by the connection between artist, audience, the space and time when it happens.

Taking centre stage, the swooping logo is a visual expression of music as a rich and ever-changing art form. It is fluid, intuitive and yet – like De Bijloke’s highly curated programme – precise and carefully crafted.

Working closely with the team at De Bijloke, Pentagram designed a flexible, adaptable system that can scale from classical programmes to family events to jazz and experimental work.

Alive, open and expressive, it is a living system that is connected to sound at its very heart, and echoes the idea that at De Bijloke, no two nights are ever the same, and every performance is a unique, memorable and rich experience.

The colour palette is drawn from the space’s unique features found across the building, each working in contrast with vibrant tones from a wide range of hues which represent the breadth and diversity of the music programme.

For jazz, as a unique part of the programme, the logo behaviour is even more fluid, highlighting the notion improvisation in live music performance.

While the brand identity is a coherent language designed to embrace a fluid musical programme, in cases such as Jazz and New Music the graphics come more directly from the oscilloscope visualisation, reflecting the living, fluid nature of the music.

Alive and responsive rather than static, De Bijloke‘s new identity can shift between the intimate and the grand, the evocative and the informative, while always remaining recognisably itself.
