Pentagram has designed 2018’s edition of Circular, the Journal published by The Typographic Circle. A volunteer-run and not-for-profit organisation, The Typographic Circle aims to bring designers with an interest in type and typography together.
The thirteenth issue designed by Pentagram, partner and designer Domenic Lippa asked the committee that run the Circle to contribute their own article on an individual or issue that inspires them.
“The committee are the unsung heroes of the Typographic Circle. They work tirelessly to ensure that we have an eclectic but broad-based agenda of talks and events,” says Lippa.
The result covered a wide range of interviews and influencers from Vaughan Oliver, John McConnell, Michael Wolff and woodblock printer Kelvin Smith through to Jim Sutherland’s A-Z and John Bateson’s favourite books.
Each article has an individual headline solution and introduction, reflecting the article itself but the main thread of the issue is based around a strong, simple grid. A column of Baskerville allows for a small disruption with some of the text extending out or withdrawing at various points.
This issue has been released with nine different covers, one for each of the articles within the issue. Random slipcases were also produced as well as a series of limited edition posters that will be released soon.
