'Cheer'

Brand Identity, Film & Motion Graphics

Identity and title sequences for the Netflix documentary series from Emmy award-winning director Greg Whiteley.

Cheer is an Emmy award-winning Netflix documentary series following the 14-time NCA Champion-winning Navarro College Bulldogs Cheer Team. For both seasons of the series, Pentagram has created the title sequence, end credits and other motion graphics with graceful and angular typography inspired by the poise and athleticism of the cheerleaders.

The opening titles for Season 1 features an elegant, slo-mo routine performed by the Navarro Team, while the opening for Season 2 includes both Navarro and rival team Trinity Valley executing an amazing routine that was choreographed and filmed specifically for the sequence.

For the second season, Pentagram created animated timelines that help viewers navigate the shifting storylines and time jumps of a dramatic two-year period that included the team’s newfound fame after the popularity of the show, the cancellation of the 2020 National Championships due to the pandemic, and the controversy surrounding a former team member.

Cheer was created by Last Chance U director Greg Whiteley and his One Potato Productions and Boardwalk Pictures. Pentagram also designed the graphics for his “Last Chance U: Basketball” and “Wrestlers,” and the elegant use of typography across all three shows provides a graphic signature for producer-director Whiteley.
