‘Red Trees’ Opening at Quad Cinema, NY from September 15, 2017
In her first feature length film, Pentagram partner Marina Willer traces the remarkable story of her father’s family through the perils of World War II.
Marina Willer, a designer, film maker and partner at Pentagram, reflects on the story of her father and grandfather, forced out of Europe for their Jewish origins; how theirs was one of only twelve Jewish families to survive the Nazi occupation of Prague during World War Two; and how they escaped to a new life in Brazil where her father Alfred Willer grew to become a successful and influential architect.
She hopes that by retracing Alfred’s journey she will come to better understand her father and make sense of her own life in today’s multicultural world. With the world seemingly poised to follow the path of racism, xenophobia and intolerance that led to World War Two, she is compelled to tell this story.
Beautifully shot by City of God’s César Charlone and narrated by the late Bafta award winning actor Tim Pigott-Smith, Red Trees is a glimpse into the fear and hope that refugees experience, offering a timely account of emigration in the face of war.
Having premiered at the Cannes Film festival in May, Red Trees opens at the Quad Cinema, NY from September 15, 2017.
