“Paula Scher: Serious Play” at Ginza Graphic Gallery
A retrospective exhibition of the designer’s career opens in Tokyo.
The work of Pentagram’s Paula Scher is explored in Paula Scher: Serious Play, a retrospective exhibition of the designer's career on view at ggg / ginza graphic gallery in Tokyo from February 4 through March 25, 2019. The exhibition features over 100 posters, along with record covers, book covers, logos, a selection of Scher’s map prints, and footage of environmental graphics projects.
The title “Serious Play” is something of a goal for Scher as a designer, who has described her work process as “Serious ⇨ solemn ⇨ hackneyed ⇨ extremely bored ⇨ rediscovered.” Thus, at the stage when “serious” morphs into “solemn,” “play” is in danger of disappearing, so she starts a new journey again to find fresh ground.
