The Pentagram partner has been named an Honorary Royal Designer for Industry.

Congratulations to Pentagram partner Michael Bierut, who has been honored with the UK’s most prestigious design award, the Royal Designer for Industry (RDI)

Every year the Royal Designer for Industry title is awarded by the Royal Society of Arts (RSA) to individuals who demonstrate “sustained design excellence” and produce “work of aesthetic value and significant benefit to society.”

Established in 1936, at any one time only 200 designers can hold the position of RDI. The award has recognized designers from many different design disciplines including architecture, textiles, industrial design and fashion. Current RDIs include Norman Foster, Paul Smith and Margaret Calvert. Non UK-designers receive the Honorary RDI designation.

The awards were presented at the annual dinner at the RSA in December. Michael joins current Pentagram RDIs Paula Scher and Marina Willer, as well as partners emeriti Alan Fletcher, Colin Forbes, Kenneth Grange, Fernando Gutiérrez, David Hillman, John McConnell and Peter Saville.

Michael is interviewed by fellow RDI and graphic designer Mike Dempsey on the latest episode of the RDInsights podcast. Listen to it here.
