Lorenzo Apicella was asked to design a new flagship branch building for M&T Bank that would capture the essence of M&T’s core values with a design that would endure well into the future, differentiating M&T from its competitors with a distinct and compelling image.

It was agreed that this flagship branch, located in West Seneca, New York, would be the model for all future branch construction and renovation. As an architectural prototype the branch design needed to be adaptable to variable future site conditions and business needs. It also had to meet M&T’s environmental goal of having a low carbon footprint, consuming as little energy as possible and producing minimal amounts of waste. The completed building is anticipated to achieve an LEED Gold rating.

M&T Bank officially opened its newest branch at Southgate Plaza in West Seneca, New York, this week, the first branch built with a contemporary new design by Pentagram Partner Lorenzo Apicella serving as a model for future branch construction and renovation.

The new 9100 sq ft building was constructed to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standards (LEED) established by the U.S. Green Building Council and will soon be LEED registered. LEED is a rating system distinguishing high-performance buildings with less impact on the environment. The project was designed by Apicella and his team in San Francisco and London. Local AOR’s were HHL and Kideney.

Construction Under Way on New M&T Bank Signature Branch

Lorenzo Apicella and his team in San Francisco and London have designed a new flagship branch for M&T Bank in Buffalo, New York. The 9,100 sq foot building is due for completion by year’s end and will serve as the model for all of the bank’s future branch construction and renovation.

“This new design language is deliberately more contemporary and expressive than M&T’s present branch architecture,” says Apicella. “Its inspiration, however, was the architecture of numerous enduring financial institutions—not least of all that of M&T’s own iconic Buffalo headquarters.”

Apicella’s team is working with local architects of record Kideney and HHL on the project.

Lorenzo Apicella has added to the growing list of Pentagram projects designed for Harley-Davidson. Together with his team in San Francisco and independent curator Ileen Gallagher, Apicella designed Harley-Davidson: Designing Customs, an exhibition showcasing Harley’s famed design, research and development process. The exhibition was staged in Milwaukee as part of Harley-Davidson’s 105th Anniversary Celebration in August, coinciding with the opening of the new Harley-Davidson Museum designed by James Biber with exhibitions designed by Abbott Miller.

New Work: Jimlar

Lorenzo Apicella has designed a 13,500-square-foot showroom for the footwear company Jimlar on the corner of Fifth Avenue and 56th Street, in the heart of New York’s luxury retail district. With James Biber’s team facilitating the design and construction, Apicella was able to overcome the challenges of a low ceiling and deep footprint to create a sophisticated showroom of seven private view galleries held together by a large central space that contains a reception area, a lounge and an island meeting room.

The galleries ring the showroom, taking advantage of its perimeter natural light, while the central space is a southwest-oriented linear layout with canted walls that draw visitors towards the windows of Fifth Avenue. Three round, backlit ceiling lights add height and airiness to the space, while complementary colors and materials such as walnut floors, chalk white and dove gray walls, and furniture from B&B Italia lighten the showroom’s deep footprint.

“The arced and canted walls and the subtle curves of the island meeting room were inspired by the spare lines of classic shoe designs,” says Apicella.

Lorenzo Apicella’s exhibit design for Sonance won Exhibitor Magazine’s Edge Award, the magazine’s top honor across all exhibition design competition categories. The award, juried by an esteemed panel of design leaders, is the highest recognition for exhibit design and graphics excellence within the global exhibit industry.

The award-winning exhibit, originally designed for the CEDIA Expo, marked the launch of the company’s new graphic identity, as well as a range of new architectural in-wall and in-ceiling speakers, also designed by Pentagram. “This prestigious award reinforces our belief in how a holistic branding and design strategy can help a company deliver a powerful message in a way that is differentiating and emotionally compelling,” says Sonance founder Scott Struthers.
